Amine polymers are polymers that contain amino groups inserted in the main chain or substituting one or more hydrogen atoms of the same chain.
Among the amino polymers of the first type we can mention polyethylenediamine and polymethylenamine, while among the polymers of the second type, that is among the polymers with amino groups as lateral substituents, we can mention the polymers of enamines (α-β-unsaturated amines characterized by the grouping -C=C-N) that in their base molecule can have the primary, secondary or tertiary amino group; enamines have also the possibility to copolymerize for example with acrinotrile.
In this class we must also remember the high molecular weight polyallylamines insoluble in water and soluble in diluted acids. It must be added that the applications of amine polymers in the industrial field are limited by the high cost of the manufacturing process. They are used in the manufacture of ion exchange resins. The most important polymer of this class is polyethylamine which is used in the textile field as an antistatic agent and to decrease the flammability of cotton, while in paper processing it increases the workability and dyeability. It is also used as a copulant agent and in flocculation processes.
